Jumper Cables & Jump Starters
What is the difference between jumper cables & jump starters?
The main difference is the battery source. Jumper cables require another battery source, typically another vehicle, while jump starters have built-in batteries.
Why do I need a jumper cable or jump starter?
It is always a good idea to have jumper cables or jump starters. Battery problems can occur without warning. Cold temperatures greatly reduce battery capacity or you may just have accidentally left your lights on. You can even be a hero and help others with battery problems on the road.
If you are uncomfortable asking strangers for help or nobody is around, a jump starter is ideal.
For maximum peace of mind, it is recommended to have both jumper cable and jump starter stored in your vehicle.
What is gauge?
Gauge refers to the thickness of the wire. The higher the gauge, the lower the thickness. Thickness of the wire refers to the electric power that it can handle and push through.
Is length important for a jumper cable?
You don't control where you experience battery problems. This is why a longer jumper cable is ideal as it gives you more flexibility in the position of your vehicle and the charged battery source.
Power Inverters
What can a power inverter do and what can I use one for?
A power inverter converts DC power into conventional AC power. You just connect the inverter to a battery and plug your AC devices into the inverter and you’ve got power on the go. You can power appliances and electronics on cars, RVs and trucks, yachts, outdoors and in emergencies and power outages with inverters.
What power inverter to buy?
Identify the voltage of your battery source and the wattage power requirement of the products that you want to connect to it. You generally add the wattage of items that you may want to run at the same time. Use the total wattage, add 20%, to determine your minimum power requirement.
What is the difference between a 12-Volt and 24-Volt power inverter?
The main difference is the type of battery you want to run your power inverter on. Most vehicles run off a 12 volt battery and most appliances run on this voltage. The 24 volt are generally used in very heavy duty and industrial use cases.
What is meant by continuous watts and peak watts?
Some appliances or tools, such as ones with a motor, require an initial surge of power to start up (“starting load” or “peak load”). Once started, the tool or appliance requires less power to continue to operate (“continuous load”).
Do any power inverters above 400 watts include a cigarette lighter adapter?
Generally, no. Cigarette lighters cannot handle large loads.
